Sailing Blog from the Ionian Sea

Up to the NE tip of Meganissi and then its a beat to get around onto the north shore.

Wind is dropping off as we get close ro Porto Spiglia (the bay for Spartachori) but it is time to start the volvo and sort out the fenders and lines anyway before motoring up to Steve and Jerries taverna at the far end of the bay.

Here the flotilla lead skipper takes a back seat....

Sailing Blog from Wales - Adventures on Erimar

...The harsh winter begins to lose it`s stranglehold as the warming sun hints at a nearing spring.Lambs kick and bounce on the hillsides as daffodils tentatively open their buds in fear of a false dawn. The scent of new life grows richer and optimism fills the air.Yachtsmen break from their hibernation to tend to sleeping dormant hulls, turning winter skeletons into nautical forms, beckoning the breath of the breeze....

Sailing Blog from UK - Norfolk Brads in March 2010

...My vessel for this trip, Spitfire, is a 44ft (13.5m) Alphacraft Highliner with two steering positions, one in the cabin and the other a sort of fly-bridge on the cabin roof.

She has a beam of 12ft (3.6m) and an air-draft of 8ft 3in (2.5m)...

We are then approaching Cantley, a riverside village with a very noticible landmark, the silos of the Cantley Sugar Beet Factory are visible for miles.

At the upstream limit of the village, partly obscured by the raised banks of the flood defences is another riverside pub, The Reedcutters. There is a section of BA (Broads Authority) moorings available just above the pub. (another possible stop for the return leg).....

Sailing to the Florida Keys and Bahamas

Sailing trip about hanging around cape cod and the islands for the rest of the summer, then heading south to the Florida Keys and the Bahamas .......It is a great spot, cheap at $240/month, relatively sheltered and with great facilities, hot showers, laundry, even a captain’s lounge with comfy sofa and giant tv, book swap, several great bridges, palm trees, sunset serenades, bikes to borrow for the 6 mile ride to the fab beach on the atlantic ocean etc. Yes Stuart FL is hard to beat, and as it turns out it is also hard to leave, 2 or 3 days turned into 3 months and counting! but we are about to leave for the bahamas any day now...

Sailing Blog - West Coast of Scotland

.....We are sailing well and I notice a large rib approaching us from ahead. I remember looking at the flare pack strapped to her rail as she passed us and thinking that she was well equiped, when she did a sudden turn behind us and comes up alongside.

Speedwell, Speedwell this is Royal Navy rib on your starboard quarter, please switch to Channel xx. So the turn across our stern was to get the yacht’s name…

Speedwell we are carrying out trials of fast underwater objects in this area can you please alter course to pass north of position xxx / nnn…

Please? Oh I like polite types. But this the same navy who put their first prototype Spearfish torpedo up a beach and across the eighteenth green of a golf course at 70 odd knots a few years ago......

Sailing Blog - Sailing from North Wales to the Algarve

From North Wales to the Algarve during 2009(slowly)

...Everyone staying in Lagos is now settling into a winter routine whilst still enjoying sunshine from dawn to dusk, we can understand why it is known as the ‘Velcro port’. There is always something going on. To date we have had a trip on the replica 15th century sailing ship ‘Caravel’, visited La Rocha (The Rock) which is an important centre monitoring bird migration. They are also doing their very best to prevent the last important marsh area, used by many species on their way to Africa, to be developed into yet more tourist accommodation. (See the photograph for their method to weigh each bird.) We are also finding our way around using the very efficient and cheap local transport. ...

Sailing Blog from Tasmania - Australia

Rebel in Hobart Tasmania ..

... The Kings Pier Marina community is breaking up, with the various yachts going their separate ways. Kathleen and the twins from Motu flew back to New Zealand on Wednesday and Robert will sail the boat back when the weather is suitable. So that meant a farewell do on Tuesday night, and on Saturday night we had one aboard Rebel as we will not be coming back into the marina when we have finished on the slip. The last guests left a 1.30 in the morning and an entire batch of choc brownies was totally demolished ...

Sailing Blog - Auspray Adventures - Sailing the Australian Eastcoast

Starting at Port Douglas we aim to travel south, exploring the various island clusters between here and Townsville. Towards the end of Summer we plan to backtrack and travell northwards...
...Left Fitzroy Island around 9am heading for the Frankland Islands located just south of Cairns.

Once again the seas were calm and we estimated it would take 4 hours to get there.

The water temperature was 33 degrees and there were patches of algae coveriing the surface which smelt rank. We also saw massive jelly fish along the way with schools of fish living in them.

Speaking of schools, I thought we could ease ourselves into the thought of school starting next week ans so the boys started their journal writing. It passed the time and before we knew it we were pulling into Russell Island in the Frankland group which offered 3 National Park moorings to use. There was no-one else there and so we had the pick....

Sailing Blog - Marshall Islands to S.E. Asia

Sailing Blog - Sailing from Micronesia to Phillipines, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, ..

.... We were sad to leave our friends in Lamotrek, but it was time to move on. We were asked to drop off a passenger at the nearby atoll of Elato. We were reluctant, because we’ve never carried passengers before, but it turned out to be a very good experience and we got to see another beautiful atoll. Our passenger was very grateful and his village showed their appreciation by gifting us with a big bunch of drinking coconuts. We only stayed long enough to have lunch and then got underway for Palau.

It was a beautiful day for sailing, fair wind and a following sea with plenty of sunshine thrown in too. However, the next few days were not as nice, but still good sailing....

Sailing Blog - Panama and Costa Rica 2009

Sailing - Bocas del Toro - San Blas - Panama Canal - Panamanian Pacific Islands - Costa Rican Pacific Islands.
....Once in Shelter Bay we will be kept busy: arranging our transit of the Panama Canal, trying to get our dinghy fixed or replaced, looking for a replacement outboard, getting the auto-helm repaired, and numerous other things that benefit from being in a marina and near a big city. I will also try to finish this blog, start a new one for 2010, and reply to all the unanswered emails waiting in my inbox…please be patient! ....

Cool Breeze Sails South - Hilton Island to the Dry Tortugas

We're leaving Hilton Head Island for a winter sail to the Keys and possibly the Dry Tortugas, seeking warmer weather. This is our 2nd trip South and our 3rd extended sailing trip.

... We’ve stayed in St. Simons another day due to the wind factor and trying to cross St. Andrew’s Sound with incoming tide and wind from the opposite direction. If you ever have an inkling of traveling when the Peerys are going somewhere, do not go. Our timing is incredibly horrible. Who else could travel when the temperatures are the coldest on record for the longest period of time? The restaurant at St. Simons is closed for cleaning until Jan. 7. There are no hand warmers to be found in St. Simons. Our brand new TV cuts out the sound every few minutes for about 15 seconds, very annoying. The cat sleeps all day and meows all night....

Getting to the Bahamas and everywhere in between

Leaving from Niceville Florida and getting to the Bahamas and all the places in between. Check it out!

We finally left Ft Myers. Originally we were headed for Marco Island, about 30 miles south of Ft Myers, but we had such a smooth sail and the water was so calm we decided to keep going. And go farther. And even farther. And through the night even farther. This is when the wind and waves started acting up however. Throwing the boat around like a paper cup in a tub is a good analogy .....
